BUSHVELD HOLIDAY SHED

“Instead of a beautiful space ship, I want a tugboat”

Our client asked us to design a weekend getaway on a small holding 1.5 hours north of Johannesburg. The holiday shed is a flexible space that can be used for table tennis, TV games and socializing. It also has a compact kitchen, bedroom, sleeping loft and bathroom allowing up to five guests to overnight. A standard steel shed, similar to the ones seen in this region, was used to provide an accurate framework for infill and to achieve a lofty volume. It’s one end faces an existing farm dam converted into a natural pool with a raised patio and a large roof for shade. The roof was constructed using minimal steel sections and has a clear span of 9m for unobstructed views into the landscape.

A large tip-up door without a door frame or threshold opens up the side of the holiday shed, framing views into the landscape.
